What Is Bandi Chhor Divas And Why It Is Celebrated

Bandi Chhor Divas is the anniversary of Guru Hargobind Ji being released from the prison at Gwalior Fort in 1619 AD. Guru Ji refused to leave the fort on his own and demanded the release of 52 Hindu Kings. The Moghuls decided on a compromise; they would only release the Kings that could hold onto the Guru Ji’s Chowla (gown,) this was meant to limit the number of prisoners who could be released. However, Guru Ji had a coat made with 52 tassels attached to it so that all the princes could leave prison with him.

Upon their return to Amritsar, grand celebrations were held and Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) was illuminated with lots of lights and candles. The story reminds Sikhs of freedom and human rights. Traditionally sweets and diva (candles) are exchanged.

We at One Stop would like to wish a very blessed Bandi Chhor Diwas to our colleagues and customers who are celebrating. May your homes always be filled with love and light
