5 Sustainable Ways to Reuse Halloween Pumpkins

Halloween is over, and your carved jack-o’-lanterns have had their moment to shine. But before you toss them in the bin, consider this: thousands of tonnes of pumpkin waste are generated in the UK each year. That’s a scary amount of food waste! Luckily, there are plenty of ways to give your pumpkins a second life, helping animals, gardens, and communities in the process.

1. Donate to Local Farms or Animal Sanctuaries

Many animals love pumpkins! Farms, zoos, and animal sanctuaries often accept unpainted, non-mouldy pumpkins as treats for pigs, chickens and goats. Just be sure to call ahead and check their donation policy.

2. Compost It

Pumpkins are rich in nutrients and break down quickly, making them perfect for composting. Remove any candles or decorations, chop them up, and add them to your compost bin. Your garden will thank you come spring!

3. Community Compost or Food Waste Collection

Check if your local council or community garden has a composting scheme or food waste collection. Some areas even run post-Halloween pumpkin drop-offs to reduce landfill waste.

4. Make Bird Feeders

Turn your pumpkin halves into natural bird feeders. Scoop out the insides, fill them with birdseed, and hang them from a tree. It’s a fun way to support local wildlife as the weather gets colder.

5. Cook It (If It’s Still Fresh!)

If your pumpkin hasn’t been carved or left outside, it might still be edible. Roast the seeds for a healthy snack, or use the flesh in soups, pies, or curries. Just make sure it’s a culinary variety and not just decorative.
