Bees Needs Week

Did you know, since 1900, the UK has lost 13 species of bee, and a further 35 are considered under threat of extinction?

In the UK, bees are not protected by law but are an important part of our environment, playing a crucial role in food production. We all have an important role to play in helping pollinators survive and thrive as bees need our help now more than ever.

A few simple steps can be taken to improve habitats for pollinators:

Bonus: Revive a tired bee by mixing white granulated sugar with one teaspoon of water, placing on a spoon and leaving it in front of the bee

Fundamentally, by working together to protect pollinators, food production and the diversity of our environment will be supported. Humans must learn to coexist with nature in our communities in a way that allows sustainable development without destroying habitats, and instead enhancing habitats to reverse biodiversity loss.

The National pollinator strategy is a 10 year plan published in 2014, developed after a thorough review of the evidence base and wide consultation.

It sets out how government, beekeepers, conservation groups, farmers, researchers, industry and the public can work together to improve the status of pollinating insect species in England.
